If you were in a room you’d been in hundreds of times and the lights went out, would you be able to move around without bumping into furniture? Do you have a strong enough visual in your head of the room’s layout to make up for the lack of light? Rolling out a new business strategy without helping your employees truly understand it can be synonymous with the above scenario. If your employees are used to the way things are, and you unveil a new corporate strategy, you could literally be putting them in the dark. But, if you provide them with a visual of what the strategy looks like, and the roles they play within the big picture, they are able to gain a deeper understanding by literally envisioning it.

So, what do you need to get started? A marker and an open mind. Work with your people to get something on paper – images, words, ideas. Encourage everyone to contribute through every step and iteration of the visual until you get it where it needs to be. The goal is to end up with a visual that evokes passion from your employees. This exercise will help you move beyond data and numbers and will enable your people to tap into their right brain to emotionally connect to your strategy. The outcome is an engaged workforce invested in making your vision a reality.
